In the 2000 election Al Gore called for $5 a gallon gasoline to force people to give up their SUVs and drive small cars. The price of gasoline remained about the same for the next 6 years or so until January 2007.

When the Democrats took over the Congress in January 2007, gasoline started to rise and went up to $4 a gallon.
